 Aerith

Name: Aerith Gainsborough
Nickname(optional):Flower girl, Aer

Age: Twenty-four, by her claim.
She was born about 35 years ago, but she was dead for part of it, and people seem to age funny in Traverse. As in, not really at all.

Gender:Female

Species:Ancient; or more properly, Cetra. I’ll explain what that means in a moment.

Position:Healer

Picture(optional):

Appearance:
Aerith is fairly small, five foot three and slender. She wears her hip-length brown hair tied back with a pink ribbon and caught in a long twist, with a pair of locks left free to curl past her collarbone, and bangs to frame her face. Her bright green eyes are clear as water, and usually smiling.
She tends to wear pink dresses, calf-length, usually short- sleeved or sleeveless, with brown boots. She likes bracelets.

She rarely tries to hide what she feels, and she mostly smiles-- happily, wryly, compassionately, mischievously, patiently, and so on. She tends to be still and quiet - not all the time of course, but generally.

Personality:
Aerith has always been kind and sweet and cheerful and caring. She cares about everyone- the world in general and her friend in particular.
She pours everything that she is into Radiant Garden, and it's never occurred to her to do otherwise. But then, growing plants isn't work, and healing people? That’s second nature to her. She couldn't not any more than she could stop breathing.

She’s often a bit strange, saying things that don’t quite make sense at first, or seeming to know things she has no way of knowing. She’ll play it up, too, doing it on purpose. She has a streak of mischief, after all - not a wide one, but it runs deep.

She has never been one to hold grudges, and even less so now. But sometimes she still can’t help but be frustrated by people when they work so hard to be stupid.

She gave up a lot to be alive again, in knowledge and clarity and understanding. But…. it’s been worth it.
Besides, (and she grins when she says this, cause she knows it weirds people out) it’s only temporary.

Powers/Spells:
Aerith is best at healing and support magic - learning Cure was one of the easiest things she’d ever done. However, without materia she’s horrible at offensive magic. Magic here is somewhat different from using materia.
In the magic of this world, she has things like Curaga, Esuna, Revive and Regen, Scan, Haste and Slow, Stop, Sleep and Silence, Reflect and Shell and Protect. Relly all sopport magic, but she keeps studying theory and has lots of ways to use these besides their basic battle forms.

She hears Voices, of course - the voice of the worlds. That’s what being a Cetra is about, this connection to the Lifestream, to the flow of spirit. It’s always been there, in the back of her mind, in her blood, and it’s only gotten stronger with everything that’s happened. Generally, though, it’s such a cacophony that she can’t make much out.

Limit breaks:

Healing Wind- cures the entire party (all her nearby allies) for half their full health.
Seal Evil- stops enemies with equal or lower power levels to hers from moving and casting magic. Sort of a combined stop and silence cast.
Breath of the Earth- Cures all status ailments. Mass Esuna.
Fury Brand- Puts any two of her allies at limit.
Planet Protector- makes all allies within range temporarily invincible.
Pulse of Life- revives and restores all Hit points and Magic points of all allies within range .
Great Gospel- revives and restores all Hit points and Magic points, of all allies within range and makes them temporarily invincible.

History:

Aerith Gainsborough grew up in the slums under Midgar. Well, the first three weeks of her life were in Glacier Village, and the next seven years in a Shin-Ra lab, but she considered herself to be from the slums. Aerith’s mother broke the two of them out of the labs, though she died in the escape - Ifalna was a strong women, but her body was not, not after that last seven years. Elmyra Gainsborough adopted the girl.

Aerith was a cheerful, loving child, though sometimes very strange, and she grew into a cheerful, loving young women. The Turks tried take her back a few times, but somehow - and you’d have to ask them about that - they never managed it.

One day Zack Fair fell in to her life - quite literally - when she was about seventeen, and before long she was dating the friendly, exuberant SOLDIER First. She didn’t always get to spend a lot of time with him, but enjoyed the time they did had very much until one day he stopped coming by. As no one told her anything, she didn’t find out what happened to him until after she was dead.
….I’m getting there, I promise.

Five relatively uneventful years passed.

Then things got eventful. Reactors started blowing up, and then Cloud Strife fell into her flowerbed. Then there was the thing with the Turks, and the plate fell, and she got captured, and then AVALANCHE got her out, and when they left Midgar, she went with them.
They traveled all over the world, went places she never dreamed see would see.

Sephiroth made the voices in her head focus, as they never had before, but she couldn’t understand them clearly enough until they reached the Temple of the Ancients. Everything came together there, for her.

She left without explaining where she was going and why, really, because she didn’t know how, and didn’t have time to find the words. She did her best to tell Cloud and she hoped he’d understand. And maybe when she was done she’d have time to explain.

It was the most terrifying thing she had ever done, because the floor was cold and hard, and her hand were shaking, and what if she couldn’t do it, couldn’t pray hard enough, and what if Sephiroth came and killed her before she could finish (because there wasn’t really any way he wouldn’t notice what see was doing), and -- but then she thought of her friends, of Cloud, and if she had enough faith to believe in them, then she could believe in herself, too.

So she prayed, and then Sephiroth came out of nowhere, out of the sky, and he killed her. But he was too late. She had finished.

Dead and buried, Aerith pulled an Obi-wan. This is best detailed in http://one.xthost.info/ffwebnovel/ “The Maiden Who Travels The Planet”, but basically, Holy wasn’t going to be enough because Sephiroth was blocking it, but Cloud and the others broke though that, but it still wasn’t enough because Meteor was too close, so she called up all the Lifestream and threw it back.

Time passed, though she wasn’t really aware of it. There were dark stirrings in the Lifestream. Jenova had left her stain upon the world and it was infecting the children of the planet. It hit worst among the youngest, and those closest to the Lifestream. And Jenova’s youngest were moving in the world.

And there was Cloud. What he had done and what he had failed to do was eating away at him. With all that was happening she had the opportunity to speak to him, sort of, and in the end his heart was more that strong enough. He found his way, and found what forgiveness meant, and once again he broke the block and let her move in the world. The water rose to wash the stain away, and the rain fell, and she gathered up the fragment-children to herself and brought them home.

So that turned out alright in the end.

Only it wasn’t the end, because it never really is. But she rejoined the Planet and should have been done, and then the Planet fell out from under her.

If you ask her why or how she came back to life - walking-around-breathing life, that is - she’ll tell you she doesn’t remember. This is mostly true. After all, she was dead then, and many things are clearer when viewed from the Promised Land.

Anyway, next thing she knows, she’s got a body again, and she’s in Hollow Bastion, just in time to find Cid, and Yuffie, and meet Squall, and then that world goes away too.

She could hear it fracturing, vanishing. And the other worlds too, as they disappeared, she heard them cry out.

In Traverse Town, they -- Squall (not Squall, he changed his name, Leon), Leon and Yuffie and Cid and Aerith stuck together hard as they could, all the long years, hardly daring to hope for more.

Then finally, finally, the Keyblade showed up. It brought with it hope - a small, almost painful hope, for it was wielded by a child, a fourteen year old boy with far more enthusiasm then skill, but still hope. And they had no better hope. So they gave him the best they could, little as it was, a moment’s rest and what little the information they had.
He, Sora, left in the company of the King’s High Wizard and Knight Champion, and they waited, and waited, and tried not to hope to hard or worry to much, and soon found it easier that they had thought. He was a bundle of light and determination, and it was somehow impossible not to believe in him.

And then the belief was justified. He faced the darkness, and he won. Light returned, and with it the worlds, their voice lifting in her blood like song, whole and glorious.

They returned to Hollow Bastion, Aerith and Leon and Yuffie and Cid and Merlin and even Cloud, and the others who had come as well, coming home.

The next year was all hard work leavened with small triumphs as they set about restoring this home of theirs, Hollow Bastion, for there was much to be done. For one thing, the worlds may have returned, but the heartless were still lose in them.

Things got better, and then they were getting worse again, and then Sora returned all as bright and grinning as ever. Once again he faced the down the darkness and the nothingness, helping them in the course of his quest to fight - and win - against the massed army of heartless, and a computer program gone amuck.

And there was Cloud. It seemed to be a constant in her life. And Sephiroth was about as dead as she was. It seemed neither of them could settle until they had settled things between them. She couldn’t do much to help, not if both of them were to come out whole, for she wasn’t a part of what was between them. And as long as one of them wasn’t whole, neither was the other, anymore.

They both went away, fighting, but they would return. And life, meanwhile - well, life carried on. Chaotic, certainly, but all in all good.

Recently the lights went out. Eternal night is definitely not Aerith’s favorite thing.

Role Playing Sample:

It wasn’t easy to grow plants without sunlight, but it wasn’t impossible either. They’d have to get food somewhere, though - they hadn’t been self-supporting before the sun stopped coming up, and without it that sufficiency was going to be a long, long time coming. And she was doing an awfully good job of distracting herself, she thought.

It was like -- like the darkened sky was smothering them with it’s wide-openness. Like having an attack of claustrophobia and agoraphobia at the same time, which was exactly what was wrong with Seikie who was doing fine as long as he stayed away from the windows.

Aerith smiled and shook her head at her own dark thoughts. She wasn’t really worried - it was hard to get really worried, anymore - but hope and fear were both part of being alive. But so was concentrating on minutiae, and she had some major minutiae to think about. For instance, food. If nearly everyone was suffering from this endarkening, there could be real problems. While the darkness was made a grand specter, something to pin fear on, famine could make them tear themselves apart. So. The Islands were still light, she knew - who else? And meanwhile, what could they grow under lamps or in the dark?

All was, really, hardly ever lost.
