 Entrance to the Past [[Cloud]]
« Thread Started on Dec 24, 2007, 11:11pm »

Aerith walked down the streets of the Radiant Garden. She stared into the doorway of their former base, back when it was Hallow Bastion. She set her hand to the door lightly, as if feeling the presence of it's former self.

She looked into the dark sky. Darkness here was more than terrifying, it had it's own life. Darkness is meant to devour the souls of the happy, but this darkness was different. It was like the same feeling in the light, but dim and no sun showing anywhere.

She stood at the mouth of the town, back against the wall as she searched for a sign of movement. She smiled lightly, bowing down to fix the lifeless flowers in the cradle across the way. She sighed then, there was no fixing them.

Cloud was back in Radiant Garden, for now. He was walking around the town with his arms crossed in front of his chest and his sword securely strapped to his back. The townspeople had long since stopped staring at his strange appearance but he still got a few apprehensive looks once and a while.

He had just gotten back from visiting the site where he had placed Zack's old sword, the sword he had used to mercilessly kill people for his own gain.

He noticed Aerith kneeling over some dead flowers. He almost decided to walk past her as if he didn't know her but stopped when he heard her sigh.

Aerith looked up through her long eye lashes. Darkness seemed to be spreading like a disease. She wanted to stop it, so badly, but even her own healing powers could not save them. She cupped the dying flowers within her hand just to watch them crumble into ashes that layered her fingers. She sighed again.

She could hear the footsteps of someone behind her. She did not smile, she did not show any type of emotion, only listened to him stop right behind her. Oh, She knew who he was.

"You've been distant." She said lightly, revealing her constant notice in the details of time. She did not look at him, only lightly wondered: "Where have you been?" She was not angry, oh no, just curious.

Cloud was not at all surprised when she asked him that question. It was the same question on everyones minds when he disappeared. He always came back but he supposed that they all were worried that one day he might not.

"I've been thinking." He responded to the flower girl. He never liked to show what was on his mind, he even more disliked telling what was on his mind.

She did not smile, she did not frown, she just had a look of complete relaxation in her face. She also had a knack for speaking to him while she had her back turned. Yet, when he spoke to her, she knew him quite too well. He would not say much.

She nodded lightly. "Must be important." She said observingly. "You've been gone for hours." She said softly, still attempting to heal the flowers.

Cloud just looked at the flowers. He didn't know why she was trying to heal them when they were obviously dead. Why didn't she just give up?

"Those flowers are dead." He stated as though trying to make sense out of what she was doing. "But you're still trying to heal them..."

He sighed a very little bit, still cupping the petal within her hand and she came to the conclusion that it was, honestly, no use to try at all. She dropped her hands, standing.

"I can still give them a chance to live." She said softly. Turning to him. "Everyone needs one." She said, walking towards him, but leaving a quite spacious slot between them.

"Not everyone." Cloud growled. He respected her ability to see the good in everyone and to give everyone a second chance, but there are those who truly don't deserve them. And Cloud was going to kill the one who deserved it the least.

He met her eyes and looked down. He knew that he worried her with his obsession over his darker half, but he couldn't help it. He had to be killed. This had to be done. And the only one that could do it was him.

Ah. He may have hated showing what was on his mind, but that didn't mean it didn't show. Especially when the old pull was on him. She knew what he was talking about, what he was thinking.

"It's still not settled, is it?" Her voice and her face didn't change, still clear and gentle and light.

"It's still not settled, is it?"

Cloud looked up, trying to find an answer. He was secretly afraid it may never be settled, but he had the hope that one day he would rid the worlds of the one-winged menace. He looked back to the flower girl, unconsciously trying to pull hope from her.

"No. But it will be." He said shortly.

"Yes."

That was all she said, with the tiniest and quietest of smiles on her lips, just a trace of sympathy and understanding.

And then she clasped her hands behind her and the Ancient's smile turned into the flower girl's grin. "Have you eaten yet?" Of course he hadn't, he would have forgotten and she knew it.
"Come to lunch with me," she said, brightly, in that way that was so hard to argue with. "There should be stew." A no-brainer, that, they had stew most days. It was the only way to feed as many people as they did. But it was good stew.

"Yes." She agreed with him.

Cloud watched as her smile grew larger, "Have you eaten yet?" He suppressed a growl from his stomach, that would have been bad if she heard it. She would never let him live it down. Cloud forgot to eat often.

Of course she responded without him having to say anything. "Come to lunch with me, there should be stew." He thought for a moment, it would probably mean getting harassed by Yuffie, but free food is free food. That's something no guy can argue with.

He simply nodded.

They walked through the darkened streets in companionable silence, the dark of the unending night punctuated by the flare of gaslamps - power was spotty at best, but fire still worked. The canopy of stars stretched overhead, between the roofs - countless worlds, all pretending to be alone. It was a rather more worrying sight then it should have been, for there were great holes in the glittering spread where the stars had gone dark, and besides - It was lunchtime. This wasn’t Traverse, the stars really should have been invisible with sunlight.

But then--

The thing about the flowers was, they were bulbs. The stems and the blooms and the leaves would all die, yes, but the roots? -- they were just sleeping.

The Ex-SOLDIER walked next to the flower girl, there was a comfortable silence hanging between them that Cloud was glad for. Too often people would ask where he'd been or what he'd been doing, sometimes both. He was glad that she didn't ask questions, she just welcomed him back. It felt good to be welcomed back, even when he left unexpectedly she was always there waiting for him to return.

Even though it was noon the world was dark, Cloud had gone to other worlds to check and see what it was like there. Other world were either completely dark or experiencing lengthening blackouts. It was unnerving to be walking alone in broad daylight when suddenly the lights go out, even the sky. As if someone just flipped a switch in the heavens. Some worlds he couldn't get into them, he knew they were there but they were dark and impossible to enter.

Cloud was going to find out what the hell was going on.
